First Non-DUI Related Car Death Takes Place On Bourbon Street
NEW ORLEANS, LA - During Tuesday night’s New Year’s Eve celebrations, Shamsud-Din Jabbar drove a truck through a crowd of bystanders, killing 14 and injuring 35 more, before opening fire on responding police officers.
While the nation is still in shock over the horrific attack, investigators were stunned to discover that the incident was the first time someone had been killed in a car-related incident where the driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol on Bourbon Street since the invention of the automobile in 1893.
“We’re still investigating the suspect's motive,” New Orleans Sheriff Jim Thibodeaux said in a press conference. “And while we’re all praying for the victims and their families, I speak on behalf of the entire NOPD in expressing how baffled we are all by the fact that this is the first time an innocent person was killed by a driver who was not under the influence in this city’s history. Seriously… Even when we were a dry county in 1925, New Orleans had 112 DUI-related deaths. I mean it’s kind of funny when you think about it. I knew we drank a lot but… Wow.”
A vigil for the victims of the attack will take place on Saturday at the St. Bernard Cemetery with a strict black bead formal attire required.
